What is Focusing?

Focusing is a gentle, yet powerful practice which can help us to move towards living with greater ease, aliveness and joy.

Focusing is a natural human process. It was discovered by Professor Eugene Gendlin while studying people who changed successfully in psychotherapy. These people paused, sensed into their direct experience and came into relationship with a bodily sense of 'their problems'.

Gendlin then developed a way of teaching this ability, which he called 'Focusing':

"What is split off, not felt, remains the same. When it is felt, it changes. Most people don't know this. They think that by not permitting the feeling of their negative ways they make themselves good. On the contrary, that keeps these negatives static, the same from year to year. A few moments of feeling it in your body allows it to change. If there is in you something bad or sick or unsound, let it inwardly be and breathe. That's the only way it can evolve and change into the form it needs."

It is a body-oriented process of self-awareness and emotional healing, which offers a loving and all-accepting way of being with ourselves. With Focusing, we honour the wisdom that we have inside us and hear the subtle messages that our inner self is sending us. The result is greater calm, positive life changes and a fuller sense of connection to ourselves, others and the world around us.

Ann Weiser Cornell describes it as:

"Focusing is a way of tapping into your vast emotional intelligence through the messages of your body. With Focusing, you return to a source of knowing that has always belonged to you. Focusing gives you direct access to your own inner compass, where you know the right direction for your life. Focusing works because life naturally wants to move forward and find new possibilities. Sometimes we get stuck because we get cut off from that natural life forward energy."

Focusing is best experienced - One-to-One sessions

Marion is fully qualified with the British Focusing Association (BFA) to teach Focusing to individuals and offers:

1. A series of sessions if you wish to learn the subtle art of Focusing (it usually takes a few sessions to get a feel for what Focusing is and how it might benefit you).

2. Guided individual sessions if you feel like exploring something in your life that is stuck or difficult.

During these sessions Marion will hold a warm and welcoming space for you while you attend to your experience, be alongside you and gently guide you through the unfolding of your inner process.

Sessions are currently on Zoom or Skype only.
